MLB Players from Connecticut

In the world of major league baseball, Connecticut isn't so small. There are currently 14 active players, according to Baseball Almanac. Among the familiar names are Rajai Davis, A.J. Pollock, Jesse Carlson, Evan Scribner, and Andrew Carignan.

Rajai Davis

Rajai Davis was born October 19, 1980 in Norwich. He was involved with youth sports, playing in Little League and Babe Ruth League. He was on the team at New London High; he also played summer ball with the American Legion (http://www.blessyouboys.com/2014/3/17/5520104/better-know-a-tiger-rajai-davis).

Davis’ college team was the University of Connecticut - Avery Point. He also played collegiate ball in the summer for the Middletown Giants.

A then twenty-year-old Davis was selected in the 38th round of the 2001 draft. From there, it was still a long path to the majors: six seasons. The Hickory Crawdads, Lynchburg Hillcats, Altoona Curve, and Indianapolis Indians were all steps along the way.

In 2006, Davis broke into the majors; he was 25.

Davis is known for speed -- and for stolen bases. He has said that he uses visualization: visualizing himself making catches and runs.

A.J. Pollock

A.J. Pollock was born December 5, 1987 in Hebron. Pollock played for Rham High School and was Connecticut Player of the Year in 2006. He later played in the outfield at Notre Dame -- and continued wracking up honors. He led the team in hitting three years in a row and was Most Valuable Player two years in a row.

Pollock was a first round draft pick in 2009, selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks. He saw some time with the AA Mobile Baybears and AAA Reno Aces. He also played in the Pan-American games during his career as a minor leaguer.

Pollock made his major league debut in 2012 when he was 24. His local paper reported that when he called his mother to tell her he had been called up to the majors, he first teased her by saying he had been scratched from the AAA lineup.

Andrew Carignan

Andrew Carignan was born in 1986 in New London. He came from a family of athletes. His great grandfather was a major leaguer; his dad made it as far as college ball (http://www.goheels.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=3350&ATCLID=205673145). Carignan pitched at Norwich Free Academy. He played summer ball with the Norwich American Legion in his teens. He was selected Player of the Year by the Connecticut Coaches Association his senior year.

Carignan joined the team at the University of North Carolina, where he progressed from middle relief to closer. He played summer ball with the Bourne Braves.

Carignan, then 20, was selected in the 5th round of the 2007 draft. He left college for the minors. He did well at AAA Sacramento and was called up to the majors for the first time in 2011.

Learning from the Pros

Davis, Pollock, and Carignan were all out there on the playing fields in their growing up years. There are plenty of kids out there on Connecticut playing fields right now. Even if they aren’t aspiring major leaguers, they can learn about setting goals and attaining them. Some really relish those moments when the game is on the line.

Those who do have major league aspirations will have a long road ahead of them. They’ll rely on personal qualities as well as ball skills. Davis told young reporters, “That’s why I am here right now, because I persevered, worked hard and never gave up (http://www.kidzworld.com/article/8730-when-i-was-a-freshman-rajai-davis).”

Even playing that first major league game doesn’t mean there won’t be setbacks. Andrew Carignan, maintaining a question and answer session on Reddit while recovering from Tommy John surgery, noted, “The biggest thing for me is staying on an even keel (http://www.reddit.com/r/OaklandAthletics/i_am_oakland_as_relief_pitcher_andrew_carignan/)”.
